Obituary

Gloria Jean (Sarzotti) Opperman was born on October 30, 1931, in Healdsburg, California, to James and Catherine Sarzotti. She passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in her home, surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong member of the Healdsburg community, Gloria built a beautiful life centered on family, faith, friendship and service to others. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, James and Catherine Sarzotti; her brother, James Sarzotti Jr.; her sons-in-law, Karl Esposti and Joe Haworth; her grandson, Austin Haworth; and the father of her children, David Opperman Jr. She is survived by her five children, 15 grandchildren, and 18—and counting—great-grandchildren, who lovingly knew her as “GG,” as well as many family members and friends. Gloria graduated from Healdsburg High School with the Class of 1949. She remained close with many of her classmates throughout her life, traveling and spending time together as a group they affectionately called “the 49ers.” Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Bell. In 1952, Gloria married David Opperman Jr. She considered being a mother the most cherished role of her life and raised five children: Kim (Fred Young), David III (Julie), Brian (Debbie), Marc (Jill Goldberg), and Kara (Ted Williams). All five of Gloria’s children attended St. John School, where she formed a lifelong connection to the school and parish community. A devoted Catholic, Gloria’s faith guided the way she lived and cared for others. She regularly attended Mass at St. John’s Church—always sitting in “her” section. She generously gave her time to Catholic Social Services, participated in the Women’s Bible Study Group and served others through Meals on Wheels. Gloria’s generosity touched many lives. She was especially proud to support the Austin Haworth Memorial Scholarship at St. John Catholic School, established in memory of her beloved grandson. Her kindness, faith and commitment to helping others were hallmarks of a life well lived and part of the lasting legacy she leaves behind. Above all, Gloria treasured time with her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved spending time at her Bodega Bay home. Around Healdsburg, she could often be found sitting on the bench in front of Downtown Bakery, sipping her coffee or easily recognized behind the wheel of her car with its memorable “ExPay” license plate. Gloria considered herself lucky in life—and that luck seemed to follow her straight into the casino, where she often found the winning machine. Her beloved cat, Gato, remained her faithful companion until the end. Gloria’s legacy lives on through her family, her deep and abiding faith and the countless lives made better by her generosity. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, a beloved “GG,” a loyal friend and a woman whose life was a reflection of her faith. At Gloria’s request, a private family celebration of life was held at St. John’s Church on September 30, 2026. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Austin Haworth Memorial Scholarship at St. John Catholic School or to a charity of your choice.
