Celebrating the Life of

Christine Gail (Hodges) Avery

Obituary

Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Christine Gail Avery, age 63, of Felton, California, on July 23, 2026. She passed away after a brief fight against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded and supported by the warmth and love of her partner, family and friends. Chris was born in Seattle, Washington on February 4, 1963 to Christopher Hodges and Judith Warren. She was preceded in passing by her parents as well as her step-father, Ernest Wood. Chris grew up on the East Coast, and later moved to California in the late 1980s. She married Fritz Koontz and had two wonderful children. Chris will be remembered for her unconditional kindness, her big bright smile, her irrepressible positive outlook and a sharp sense of humor (even asking for squirt guns just days before her passing). She had a deep love for adventure, travel, camping and nature. Chris cherished the quiet moments as much as the lively ones. Whether dancing the Tango with her partner Darren, sailing, swimming, writing, reading, crafting, sewing, taking walks, camping or simply spending time with her two kids, Saimie and Keegan, family or friends. An RN for 40 years, Chris dedicated the last five years of her career to the San Jose Unified School District as a Certified School Nurse. She was deeply passionate about her work and adored the children in her care at her many schools. She is survived by her partner, Darren; her beloved children, Alexandria (Saimie) and Keegan; her cherished granddaughter, Aurora; and her step-daughters, Lindsey and Jenna. She also leaves behind her brother, Scott; sister, Cheri; half-brother, Jonathan; step-mother, June; and countless dear friends. Chris was cared for by Hospice of Santa Cruz County, whose compassionate care made her final days peaceful and comfortable in her own home. In lieu of flowers, please consider treating yourself to a Chris-approved, sugar-free, gluten-free muffin and a walk on the beach or a stroll in the woods with someone you love. She was profoundly loved and will be forever missed. A celebration of life was held in honor of Chris on Saturday, September 5 in Watsonville.
